SMorFIA (SMOR [Stuttgart Morphologie] Finite states Italian Analyzer) is a morphological analyzer of Italian verbs only; Morpho-To is a morphological analyzer of verbs, nouns, adjectives and nominal compounds.
This program works similarly to any standard morphological analyzer,
but its segmentation rules were developed adopting a different linguistic approach.
Like other tools, this analyzer is able to get as input entire documents or individual
words entered via keyboard, allowing the user to redirect the output either to screen
or to a specific file. Yet, differently from others, this tool is able to return the
user not only the different values that the flexional element may assume, but also
its complete linguistic structure, properly divided into its relevant elements.
All the above information shall be displayed sequentially within the same text string
as attribute-value pairs.
In order to manage such an elaborate structure, the analysis grammar was designed using
a different descriptive approach. In spite of adopting the classic Item-and-Process methodology,
the finite state transducer rules were organized to faithfully respect an Item-and-Arrangement
based morphological description.
